- Kanji characters appear so alien to Western eyes that Japanese companies with an interest in international markets are advised to employ other non-written means to articulate their identity. Graphic designers in Japan have had to master the art of designing logos that work on purely visual terms, often through abstract forms and striking colours. Toshiyasu Nanbu, who established his office, Taste Inc, in Osaka in 1988, approaches graphic design as the expression of an 'international language'. No brand that he has designed better demonstrates this that the one that brought him to international attention in 1995. Devised for an architect's office, it seems at first glance like a series of Japanese characters or meaningless minimalist squiggles. When the penny drops-the final element is the letters 'T' and 'S' joined as one-the sequence looks more like stages in an animation or construction, and marks perfect poetic sense.
